Known worldwide as a first-class resort town, Delray Beach is located in southern Palm Beach County , directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Delray Beach offers the visitor a full range of amenities and, of course, the incomparable beauty of nearly two miles of well-groomed, easily accessible beach.

For more than 100 years, Delray Beach has grown and prospered. A small group of Michigan settlers, led by William Linton and David Swinton began settling in the area in 1894. Inspired by the natural riches of the area, they tilled the land and grew crops year round. The environment also provided them with plenty of fresh fish, crab and lobster from the ocean.

As the 20th century progressed Delray Beach grew from a farming community into a bustling city known for its unique architecture and thriving downtown. Delray Beach became a winter resort where artists, writers and cartoonists came to escape the brutal winters and hone their crafts. Nationally known cartoonists Fontaine Fox and W.E. Pat Enright were among the luminaries who called Delray home.

Today, history plays a big role in the city's identity and future direction. Delray Beach is considered a leading figure in the state's growing historic preservation movement. The city has designated several neighborhoods as historic districts; places where residents are encouraged to preserve old homes as a living link to Delray's illustrious past.

About Delray Beach's All-America City Award

History
The All-America City Award is one of America's oldest community recognition awards, now in its 52nd year. The National Civic League is dedicated to the active involvement of citizens in the governance of their communities. Founded in 1894 by Theodore Roosevelt, Louis Brandeis and other turn-of-the-century progressives, NCL is an advocacy organization vigorously promoting the collaborative interaction of citizens, government, business and the voluntary sector in the resolution of public issues and the solving of shared problems.

What is the All-America City Award Program?
Founded in 1949, the All-America City Award annual competition honors ten communities of all sizes for extraordinary civic accomplishments made possible by the cooperative efforts of business, government, the voluntary sector, and individuals. The AAC Award Program is sponsored by the Allstate Foundation.
Why did Delray Beach win the Award?
A committee of Delray citizens and staff, Co-chaired by Jay Alperin and Chuck Ridley, prepared and submitted to NCL, a rigorous application highlighting three community projects that reflect a spirit of cooperation, creativity and involve a broad-based community self-assessment and coalition building. The NCL, from a pool of over 100 applicants across the country, chose Delray as one of 30 finalists to compete in Atlanta, Georgia. The city's 10 minute presentation before a panel of judges, followed by a question and answer session and our overall spirit of community, led the jury to recognize Delray Beach as one of the 10 All-America Cities for 2001.

What are the three community projects?
The Youth Enrichment Vocational Program:
This program was created to provide high-risk youth between the ages of 14 to 23, some identified as gang members within the Pine Grove neighborhood, an alternative to a life of crime. The goal is to direct teens away from criminal activities and make them productive members of society by teaching job skills and building self-esteem. The result of the program to date - an 84% reduction in crime in that neighborhood.
Community Neighbors Helping
This program began in 1999 and targeted minority senior citizen residents living in one of the poorest areas of Delray Beach. The "grass roots helpers" host weekly meetings with elderly residents to encourage social interaction and guest speakers assist in promoting wellness through education. They provide basic services including food, clothing, transportation and take the seniors on field trips outside their traditional environment. Over 2000 individuals were assisted last year.
Village Academy
Village Academy is a deregulated public school, owned and operated by PBC School Board built to address the specific needs of at-risk elementary students and families living in low-income neighborhoods in Delray Beach. The percentage of children reading on grade level went from 2% to 58% by end of the school year.
